OpenAI opened a newsroom Twitter account earlier this month and it's already been hacked. The new handle was taken over by a crypto scammer promoting a fake OpenAI token that was in reality a scam to steal Bitcoins.
That follows similar hacks of three key OpenAI accounts belonging to CEO Sam Altman, co-founder Ilya Sutskever and CTO Mira Murati.
OpenAI's newsroom account was created on October 13 and posted its first tweet on October 19. The account's description says it is the “official news account for OpenAI” and provides a link to OpenAI's website.
However, on October 21, the account was hacked and started posting tweets about a fake token called “OpenAI Token.” The hacker claimed that the token was a new cryptocurrency project launched by OpenAI and provided a link to lure users to buy the token. In reality, the link was a phishing site designed to steal users' Bitcoins. OpenAI has not yet issued any statement about the incident. The account has now been restored and all tweets related to the scam have been deleted.
